If Nor can't spin gold, she can always spin lies. When seventeen-year-old Nor rescues a captured faerie in the woods, he gifts her with a magical golden thread she can use to summon him for a favor. Instead, Nor uses it for a con-to convince villagers to buy straw that can be transformed into gold. Her trick works a little too well, attracting the suspicion of Prince Casper, who hates nobody more than a liar. Intent on punishing Nor, he demands that she spin a room of straw into gold and as her reward, he will marry her. Should she refuse or fail, the consequences will be dire. Desperate for help, Nor summons the faerie's aid, launching a complicated dance as she must navigate between her growing feelings for both the prince and faerie boy and who she herself wishes to become.

WHAT I LOVED: GOLD SPUN is a fairytale reimagining of Rumpelstiltskin. To ensure peace following the war between Faradisia and Reynallis, Prince Casper was a Royal hostage for six years. However, he must return home and become King of Reynallis after the Fay attacked and killed his brother, King Christopher. He meets Elenora in the woods when he becomes lost. Later that afternoon, from that chance encounter, she saves a fay named Pel and is granted a golden thread as a boon and an unbreakable circlet of gold on her wrist to call for his help again.
Elenora has struggled since her parents and older sister were killed in the war to support her three brothers. Rather than starve, she has become a great con artist. The latest stunt is to convince a nearby village that she can turn straw into gold using the gift from Pel. Things don’t go as planned when Prince Casper hears her claims and makes one of his own. She will become his wife if she can prove she can turn straw into gold or face the consequences of being a thief.
With few options, Elenora calls upon Pel to help her make the gold. With this success, she must now pull off her biggest con, acting like she can fit in at court and become Queen.
This retelling of Rumpelstiltskin is richly imagined. Elenora, Prince Casper, and Pel are all well developed.
The book ends on a cliffhanger. We will just have to wait and see as truths are revealed on all sides. Who will move past betrayal for a Happily Ever After?
Final Verdict: GOLD SPUN was a delightful retelling worthy of the genre. It was a quick read that was instantly engaging and kept the reader entertained from start to finish. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the sequel!
