Liv and Skye have been best friends since pre-school. At sixteen, they are trying to make the leap from “Hello Kitty” to lace thong underwear. Skye is incredibly talented and beautiful and into everything she can find in her Mom’s medicine cabinet. Her parents don’t seem to care what she does. Her mother is an ex-model who parties all the time and her dad still travels with his punk-rock band, leaving Skye to look after her two little sisters – when she’s not hanging around with her homeless junkie boyfriend. Liv’s parents are feeling their way through a recent divorce, but everyone seems to be OK with it. Then one day, all Liv has left is Skye’s journal – her thoughts, frustrations, hopes and fears, her colorful drawings – and a lot of anger. She decides to join her mom – an award-winning documentary filmmaker – on a trek across The Himalaya as she films the charity work of a Tibetan monk. It is a long and harrowing journey for Liv who takes Skye’s journal with her to read when no one else is around. Liv has so many questions. Will Skye’s journal give her the answers she needs to be able to let go?

Told in two distinct parts - before Skye's death and Liv's trip the Himalaya after, I enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition not only between the two settings but how the two girls lives were also juxtaposed against one another. Case truly captures how easy it can be for a teen to spiral out-of-control into addiction without a proper support system. We see Skye struggling to overcome (and eventually succumbing to) a series of bad decisions which might have been avoided had her circumstances been different

The most endearing aspect of this book for me, however, was Liv's reaction to her best friend's death and the way she chose to confront her feelings head-on. At its core, Earth to Skye is a coming-of-age novel about finding out who you are when faced with having to move on from something painful. Case certainly rises to the challenge and delivers a compelling read.
Good Points
Liv's authentic voice as the best friend to troubled Skye makes Earth to Skye a worthwhile venture. Tackling the difficult subject of drug abuse and loss, Diane Case does a great job of giving readers insight into these emotional topics.
