Lady Victoria Mansfield, youngest daughter of the earl and countess of Fairmount, is destined for a charmed life. Soon she will be presented during the London season, where she can choose a mate worthy of her status.

Yet Tory has a shameful secret—a secret so powerful that, if exposed, it could strip her of her position and disgrace her family forever. Tory’s blood is tainted . . . by magic.

When a shocking accident forces Tory to demonstrate her despised skill, the secret she’s fought so hard to hide is revealed for all to see. She is immediately exiled to Lackland Abbey, a reform school for young men and women in her position. There she will learn to suppress her deplorable talents and maybe, if she’s one of the lucky ones, be able to return to society.

But Tory’s life is about to change forever. All that she’s ever known or considered important will be challenged. What lies ahead is only the beginning of a strange and wonderful journey into a world where destiny and magic come together, where true love and friendship find her, and where courage and strength of character are the only things that determine a young girl’s worth.

Lady Victoria "Tory" Mansfield is destined for a charmed life of status and wealth. The envy of many young girls, Tory knows she is lucky which is why she goes to great lengths to hide her special talent....magic. If her powers were exposed, it could strip her of her position and disgrace her family forever. Which is exactly what happens when a shocking accident forces Tory to reveal her magic, and she is immediately exiled to Lackland Abbey, a reform school for other young men and women in her unique position. What lies ahead is a strange and wonderful world where Tory will learn that is it not her social standing or her family's wealth, but destiny and magic, true love and friendship, and courage and strength that determine her real worth as a young woman. -Back cover of Dark Mirror.

Once Tory is sent off to Lackland Abbey she is faced with 2 different sets of students. 1 group wishes to be 'cured' of their magic so they can go back home to their families, the other embraces their magic. Tory must choose which she really wants, and how this will effect her life from here on out.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book. I love 1800's England. So different from our time today. I love the way ladies are courted and presented. I love the parties, the gentlemen, the huge mansions...all of which are in this book! The book is through Tory's point of view the whole time, so we only know what she is thinking. We see Tory grow throughout the book, and I really liked that. She goes from a spoiled rich 'Lady' to a brave, courageous woman.

I will have to say that I think the 'depth' was missing a bit. I feel like the author could have elaborated a bit more on some points of the book, or conversations that some of the characters had. However, I easily got past this because I desperately wanted to know how Tory ends up and which life she chooses!

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great historical story with magic. I am also looking forward to seeing what else this author writes. Happy reading everyone!

My thoughts:

Wow!
When I started reading the first pages of this book, I didnt know what
I'd find, but I was glad to leave behind the vampires, angels, and all
mythical beings and all dystopian stories. The plot is full of magic,
fantasy, romance, historical data, and unexpected twists that kept me
biting my fingernails and unable to stop reading. I'm serious! I really
enjoyed this book! Sometimes the story was too fast, specially at the
beginning, and sometimes was a little bit slow& and also there were
parts that left me open-mouthed.

The characters were really
nice. In many books I have read, the secondary characters have been
less prominent. But in this case the author has brought us consistent
characters, hard to forget them.

CONCLUSION: I love pretty
covers, but sometimes, these books are not as good as they seem to be.
To my delight, this book, with a beautiful cover, turned out to be
great. Highly recommended to all fans of magical and historical
stories. With romance, of course!

Four Stars: I really like it!
