The Black Gryphon (Valdemar: Mage Wars #1)
Now Maar is once again advancing on Urtho's Keep, this time with a huge force spearheaded by magical constructs of his own--cruel birds of prey ready to perform any evil their creator may demand of them. And when one of Urtho's Seers wakes from a horrifying vision in which she sees a devastating magical weapon being placed in the hands of Maar's common soldiers, Skandrannon is sent to spy across enemy lines, cloaked in the protective of Urtho's powerful Spell of Silence.
This book takes place during a war. The war is between The Mage of Silence, the human called Urtho, and Ma'ar, a black sorcerer who is slowly conquering the country.
Skandranon is a perfect example of a gryphon, courageous, bold and crafty. When one of Urtho's seers has a terrifying dream of powerful magical weapons being made for every soldier in Ma'ar's army, Urtho sends Skandranon to spy on the enemy camp to find out what's going on.
But the time is moving by swiftly, and Skandranon is still not returning. Everyone is getting worried, but especially Amberdrake. Amberdrake is a kestra'chern, a healer of sorts, who has come to love the vain and brave Black Gryphon, and this is one more thing he just can't bear to lose.
