In 1874, Jack is born on the coldest night of Edinburgh history,. His mother abandons him into the care of Dr. Madeleine--who's doctor, midwife, and protector of orphans. Jack is born with a frozen heart. Dr. Madeleine saves his life by placing a cuckoo clock in his chest. When he gets older, she warns him never to fall in love or be angry. But on his tenth birthday, Jack sees and falls in love with Miss Acacia, a young street performer with an amazing voice. He asks Dr. Madeleine if he can attend the local school, in hopes of meeting the beautiful street performer. But instead he encounters a school bully who torments him until he ends up leaving. Jack journeys to Paris and later Andalusia searching for Miss Acacia. In the process he discovers the cost of owning a fully formed heart.

I really loved the writing of this story. The words are lyrical and poetic. This is an unique twist on the whole follow your heart premise.

Jack's cuckoo heart doesn't stop him from loving and wanting more out of life than staying with Dr. Madeline. Miss Acacia voice stirs something inside of him. I really loved the determination and courage of Jack. I also really liked the other characters he meets along the way. The quirks add flavor to this story.

Humorous at times but also touching, this bittersweet love story shows that sometimes the consequences of experiencing true joy outweigh the pain.
