This is the second book in Darian's Tale, the Owl trilogy. Excellent, and highly recommended as well.
Here we see the Hawkbrother Vale, how Darian lives there, and how they start a new Vale. Also - we get a new look at the village, from the perspective of their current healer, the young Keisha. Because of approaching Northern barbarians, the Hawkbrothers start building the new Vale much sooner, and they meet this new challenge together with the village. Very interesting!

I was apprehensive when I began reading the Valdemar books because the pretty horses on the cover made me think these books might be aimed towards kids or girls who dream about ponies. For most of the series, I didn't feel like that was the case, but in this series I do. There is something indescribable about the style that makes me think this was not intended for adults. It just doesn't seem suited for an adult intellect.
