Good Points
The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening is a book meant to entertain teens who enjoy a bit of horror and suspense in their love stories. This book has everything teen readers like. The Awakening sets up The Vampire Diaries series in which a young, beautiful, and very popular Elena Gilbert finds herself loving two brothers who are extremely mysterious. She must now figure out who she loves more.
This riveting story takes place in the sleepy town of Fell’s Church, Virginia. Elena is a beautiful girl who can have any guy she wants; however, she is an extremely deep person, contrasting the common stereotype of popular blonde girls. Stefan is “brooding and mysterious” and drives Elena crazy for much of the book because of his lack of interest in her, or so she thinks. Damon, whose character does not develop until the end, is dangerous, mysterious and is Stefan’s brother.
Stefan has had a rivalry with his brother since the Italian Renaissance which they were born as humans. Their feud began over Katherine von Schwartzchild, a beautiful girl whom Elena looks almost identical to. Katherine was in love with both Stefan and Damon, and both Stefan and Damon were in love with her. She broke both of their hearts because she couldn’t and wouldn’t choose one of them, as neither of them wanted to share. The readers never learn much about Stefan, but we do know that he has a dark side that he is constantly trying to hide from Elena: “He’s very unhappy about something, and if he won’t tell me what it is…” (173).
However, he can only keep the secret for so long. Elena also always feels like someone is watching her, another part of her paranoia. There is a crow that is often perched outside her house and sometimes Stefan’s house too that seems to have “an almost human stare” (70). Through keeping an intricate journal, Elena keeps track of her thoughts. Her journal entries often sound profoundly paranoid: “something bad is going to happen today,” (2) “but right now everything looks strange to me, as if I don’t belong here” (4).
Elena has a thing for Stefan from the first time she sees him pull onto the high school campus. She loves the mysterious factor, but she constantly agonizes over it. Stefan blows her off the first time she tries to talk to him, which only makes her want him even more. Little does she know that Stefan is avoiding her for her own good. Elena’s life soon becomes consumed with thoughts and actions aimed at getting Stefan’s attention and impressing him. Elena writes, “I want him to be proud of me. I want him to love me as much as I love him” (197). Eventually, Elena and Stefan forget what their minds are telling them to be together. They find that their love is strong and intensely passionate: “What she felt was not merely passion, but a bruising tenderness and a love so strong that it made her shake inside” (97). When Damon comes into town near the end of the novel, he makes it clear to Stefan that he is going to steal Elena from him and there is nothing he can do about it.
Fell’s Church is a small, sleepy town that is hardly on the map. However, this small town has its fair share of secrets, as do many small towns. The author likely chose to write about this location because small towns are the prime locations for intense drama because everybody knows everything about everybody. This concept is almost unavoidable in small towns, so placing the story in this location while the characters are trying to hide a secret makes the story all the more interesting. Having two brothers fall in love with the same girl was a genius move by Smith. It keeps the story juicy and interesting. Stefan and Damon are not just any pair of brothers, but they are vampires which makes the story somewhere to escape to instead of reading about everyday life.
One theme that can be interpreted in The Awakening is that love can be hard to come by and may seem impossible, but lovers should ignore others’ opinions and love will prevail. Even though they knew it was going to be hard, Elena and Stefan had a silent mutual agreement that they were going to be together.
The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening is an intriguing and well-written book. The only flaw with this book is that the beginning is slow, but that is only because this is the first book in the series and the author has to set up the characters and the main story plot. This book is recommended for anybody who likes a good love story with an enthralling twist.

This was actually an alright vampire romance book. I didn't expect to like it in the beginning because I immediately saw references to Twilight. I like my books original and unique. However, I did realize that these books were published years ago, wayy before Twilight. That helped soften the blow. Personally I didn't really like most of the characters except for Damon but I do suppose after reading the second installment, that will change. (At least that's what my friend said who recommended it to me.) I do think there is a good story and I'd like to see where it goes.

Well I thought that the vampire diaries was amazing it's full of romance and thrill and so much more I love the way Stefan won't stop until elena's safe from all the vampires in mistic falls. it's amazing how Stefan and Damon are so differnt from each other damon is the bad and dangerous older brother and stefan is the sweet and gentle one I hate that Damon blames Stefan for losing kathryn in 1864 I mean  it was like 145 yers ago buld a bridge and get over it anyways elena's life must be really hard because she lost her parents and now all she has is here brother and jena.everyone should raed the vampire diaries because its AMAZING and if you like romantic horror or books about vampires and witches this is your book.

Hi really liked this series of books, the characters are well developed and interesting.  The story line is very creative.  The reader can tell that the author put a lot of time and effort into writing these books.  Now, the tv series on the CW is similar to the books but many things are different.  The characters are developed diferently, some even look completely different than in the book, which was a disappointment to the nbook fans I'm sure!  I highly recommend the books to everyone 6th grade and up.  My parents who are 60+ years old liked them.  They are a bit scary in parts  because there is a lot of  killing.  They are vampires after all!!!  I enjoyed the love story and the stuggle that the main character Elena goes through trying to deal with the fact that the boy(s) she likes are vampires.

The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening is the first book of the vampire diaries series. It tells the story of a highschool girl named Elena who soon falls in love with a new mysterious boy in school named Stephan. In turn Stephan also falls in love with Elena. There is something Different about Stephan and the moment he shows up in Fells weird supernatural things start happening. What she soon finds out is that Stephan is  Vampire who has a evil brother named Damon who will do anything to cause Stephan pain and make Elena his!

This was a great Awakening to the Vampire Diaries series.Although the writing wasnt the best. There were times when I felt is was to easy and repetetive, in places that she could have put other words she would use the same one over and over again. Over all the plot of the book was excellent. It also ended on a nice cliff hanger! I cant wait to go out and read the next one to find out what happens next!

This story opens with the sentence "Dear Diary, something awful is going to happen today." which sets the mood for the whole rest of the story. It's about Elena, a beautiful high school junior, who can get anything, or anyone, she wants. When she meets Stefan, a mysterious, brooding hottie, she knows she has to make him hers. When he resists, it turns into her personal agenda. But Stefan isn't a regular teenager, he's a vampire. A vampire with an interesting past and even more interesting brother. Elena finds herself caught up in a dangerous world, and caught between two vampire brothers. But there is something even more dangerous waiting on the sidelines....

This book demands it's readers attention. It doesn't waste any time getting to the good stuff. Not only do you get to witness a timeless love story, it is also one of danger. It keeps you on your toes; keeps you guessing. This book is a good read for teens and adults who love a good love story, with mystery thrown in the mix. Or anyone that appreciates a good book!

It took me a couple months to pick up the book off my shelf, because i thought it would just be another vampire love story, which while i love, i wanted something a little different. I shouldve read this book the day I bought it.  It's a real page-turner with plotlines that evoke lots of emotion from the reader.  I only wish I had bought the sequel.  Fans of Twilight, The House of Night Series, and books of the like will definately enjoy this novel.  Thanks for reading!

Elena Gilbert is your average high school student in Fell's Church, Virginia.  During her senior year, her mild but steady plans are torn assunder when she meets the mysterious newcomer.  His name is Stefan Salvatore and boy does he have a story to tell.  Beyond his old world roots, there is something different about him that she can't quite put her finger on.  Eventually through her own stubborn determination...all is revealed.  Stefan is a vampire!  Around this same time, attacks are occuring throughout their small town which leaves Elena in a bit of a bind....is Stefan behind them?  Can the one she is falling in love with truly be the monster at the heart of this "crime" wave?

Recently turned into a TV series (2009), new light is being shed on this old classic (not that old, but old considering it wasn't published in the same year).  Join the throng of fans in waiting by discovering the novels that inspired the series....as well as an author with talent to boot!  Happy reading!
