Sweet Sixteen: Julia
Have I got a great new series for you! HarperTrophy introduced "Sweet Sixteen" on January 14, 2000 with two books: Julia and Lucy. The next two titles will be available on February 11, 2000 (Kari and Trent) and the final two (Marissa and Sunny & Matt) will be released on March 17, 2000.
As an added bonus, each book includes a music CD with some hot new songs (I have to say that it doesn't get much better than this)! The artists on the CDs include 21st Century Girls, Babel Fish and M2M. Be sure to try the CDs in your computer for extra cool stuff like music videos and band bios.
The first book, Julia, is a re-telling of the classic Prince & the Pauper story. Julia meets Maggie while at the DMV and discover that they are virtual twins.
Since both of them are dreading their sweet sixteen parties (for different reasons that I won't reveal--it would spoil the surprise!), they decide to switch places. Julia is a veritable modern day princess, while Maggie works part time at a fast food restaurant.
In the end, they both find some happiness and how to be true to themselves. I especially like the end of Julia's story...you would never guess who she would wind up dating at the beginning of the book.
Sweet Sixteen #2, Lucy, is a very different story. Like all of us at one time or another, Lucy wants to reinvent herself. When her father moves them across Chicago, she finds her chance and goes from "grunge/goth girl" to "preppie girl."
But not everything goes perfectly and she soon finds her two lives (and then three, when she meets a college boy who thinks she is in college too) clashing together. Everything comes to a dramatic conclusion when she is invited to three Sweet Sixteen parties in one night.
Both of the books are quick reads and will quickly engross. And they have a worthwhile message that comes through strongly--be true to yourself.
Sweet 16: Julia is about two girls named Maggie, and Julia. They are both dreading their own sweet 16's, so they decide to switch lives for a day. They look like twins but they are not related at all. This book is full of twist, and is extremely fun! This book is for anybody who wants to read a fun teen novel.
