A celebration of geeks and nerds everywhere
Overall rating
Writing Style

This collection of short stories celebrates geeks and nerds
everywhere.  With offerings from some of
the biggest names in YA literature today*, theres something here for every
kind of nerd:  Trekkers, gamers, Rocky
Horror devotees, quiz bowl whizzes, lit geeks, and more.  Highlights include Holly Black and Cecil Castelluccis
tale of an illicit romance between a Klingon and a Jedi; Tracy Lynns popular
girl who enlists the schools geeks to teach her about movies, gaming, and
sci-fi in order to impress her boyfriend; David Levithans story of a
dysfunctional quiz bowl team; and John Greens account of two friends who are
the subject of their schools annual Freak the Geek tradition.  Although those stories were the high points
for me, every story in Geektastic is satisfying and offers the reader something
to think about, be they geek or otherwise.
The authors chosen for this volume clearly love geek culture and are
proud of their nerd tendencies.  This love
translates into authentic voices presenting the problems that geeks (and teens
in general) face, and shows the passion for each characters own particular nerd

Interspersed with the stories are one page comics written by
Black and Castellucci, and illustrated by Hope Larson and Bryan Lee OMalley covering
topics such as 20-sided dice, vampires vs. zombies, convention etiquette, and author
signings.  These breaks between stories
offer the perfect palate cleanser before the reader delves into another facet
of geekdom.
