Crown Duel (Crown & Court #1)
Meliara is no more a traditional countess than her brother Branaric is a traditional count- she is wearing a horse blanket when she is summoned to her father's deathbed. He makes her and Branaric promise to uphold the Convenant and protect Tlanth from the greedy king. As a result, Tlanth rebels against the monarch.
I bought this book in a bookstore because it looked amazing, but when I first read it I was a bit disappointed- at first. When you first read it this book may seem rather cliched and overdone, but it is not. The strength of this book lies in the small details, and it is very easy to close your eyes and imagine a scene.
That being said, I believe this to be a better book for middle school than high school.
This book was a great begining, but it wasnt such a great book. Mel and her brother Bran promised their father, the former count of Tlanth, that they would overthrow the wicked king Galdren, and restore peace to Remalna. Unfortunatly starting a successful rebellion isnt so simple. Especilaly not when Mel gets captured by the Marquis of Sheverath, and must endure a dangerous journey home. The reason i didnt like this book so much was because it gets kind of boring and mel can be kind of stupid. However, Court Duel was a fantastic book and you cant really understand the sequel unless you read this one first.
Crown Duel is absolutely the most amazing book ever written and is my favorite book of all time. The first time I read it I couldn't put it down. The plot twists and turns, awlays keeping you reading, and the chacters are so real and superbly well written that you feel as if they could come right out off the page. You sympathize with the heroine Mel, hate the greedy king Galadran, and can't help but fall in love with the "enigmatic marquis" Vidanric. This book is excellent and no one should be without it on their shelf.
Crown Duel starts just after Court Duel ends, things have changed, Meliara is focussing on reglorifing her home, her brother has gone to court and is now back with a fiancee and most importantly things in the land have shifted. Set in a world where magic is simply there, and colourwood trees are never cut down, the greedy king is no longer on the throne. Set to become the new king is a marquis, the same who played cat and mouse with Meliara in the book before, who is vain and so clothes obsessed Mel cannot stand him. So when she heads to court the book begins and so proceeds a tale narrated by a witty and loveable herione full of secrecy and cunning, secret messages and a game where you cannot know who to tust. This book is yet again brilliant and a stunning and must read sequel, it will make you laugh and cringe and feel happy inside.
If your looking for a book full of emotional insight or maybe you like nonstop action well to bad because this book is nether.Crown duel is long and boring and the lest bit satifying.so only read when you need an O.K long book.
I was caught up into the story most suddenly and surely as Mel was! (though her capture was quite literal, mine was almost so.) I enjoy it so much, that everytime I read it, it's a new but just as rewarding adventure. Time and time again I find myself flying through the scenes of her world. Not until I shut the cover behind the last words, do I realize that I am not sitting in a cold, wind-blown room, or galloping down a rain-washed road. Indeed I no longer am, I simply was.

I think that Crown Duel was a fantastic story, that had all the elements you need in a good novel. Like Meredith, I have read tons of award-winning books by stellar authors, but this book by far the best. I'm doing this to spread the word, because I think that lots of fantasy fans will want to read this.
Hands down a great book! It has romance and adventure, a mix of all the good stuff needed for a good book. I suggest every female to get a copy of this book and read it. That also goes for the sequel Court Duel. :)
This is one of the best fantasyies I've read so far. I've read books by McCaffrey to Pierce, to Anthony to Mckinley, and Smith just comes off as one of the best. her books are well plotted and told, with those wicked twist and turns and mystery. With action, war, mystery, suspense, and romance which continues on in the sequel COURT DUEL, this book is one anyone, especially fantasy lovers, can't miss!
