I read Tucker Shaws The Girls for the recipes.  You should read it because its fun.  I became a fan of his after reading Flavor of the Week, which I also highly recommend (and also has recipes).  As the title states, there are no male characters, although boys are mentioned.

The characters:  Peg and Mary are roommates and best friends at Maroon Bells School for Girls (MBSG).  Amber is the barista at Timberlake, the local Starbucks equivalent, and the local gossip dispenser.  Sylvia is the rich, plastic Goth girl troublemaker.

The action takes place over one week.  Each day is its own section.  So, on the Sunday after winter break, Peg overhears Amber saying that Marys boyfriend, Steve, is cheating on her and going out with Crystal.  Should Peg tell Mary?  What should a best friend do?  Sylvia is also at Timberlake and overhears Amber as well.

Now, Peg works at Renos, a hot new restaurant in Aspen, helping Chef Jackie.  Peg has taken culinary courses and every time she is nervous, she imagines of menus in her head such as lobster-claw salad on twice-buttered griddle rolls, Southern fried chicken with Cajun-spiced cornbread, and Peach upside-down cake with butterscotch pudding.  Is your mouth watering yet?

Sylvia, forever causing trouble, gives Mary a belated holiday presenta gift card to Timberlake, knowing that Amber will spill the beans about Steve the minute she sees Mary.  Once Mary knows, whats next?  Well, thats actually for you to find out when you read The Girls.  I can keep a secret.

Tucker Shaw has a nice way of writing. He makes you smile.  He makes you salivate.   He makes you happy.  I read The Girls in a day, smiling the whole way through.  Youll like everyone, except maybe Crystal and Steve.  Regardless how plastic Sylvia is, even she has a human side.  The action primarily takes place in Timberlake, Reno, and MBSG.  There are a few more wrinkles than Ive mentioned here.  But its all good fun.  (My only complaintthere werent enough recipes!)  Anyway, if you want an escape, The Girls is for you.  And definitely read Flavor of the Week.

Reader reviewed by Elizabeth Kennard

I picked this book up on a whim at the bookstore thinking i might like, or not. I would try it out. I actually really liked it. I liked the fact that it took place at a boarding school and that the whole cast of the book was all girls, even there was boy drama involved. I read books like this alot and i cannot say its the best one i have read, it is a good one. It is a great quick read and has intresting plot twists to it. If you are looking for a great quick read, i reccomend picking up this book!
