This is a chilling dystopian novel that leads readers to question the very essence of their identities. "Who do you think you are?"
Marena lives in a world in which the government has cracked down and assumed total control over everything. Her mother was executed as a dissident and the only ray of light in her life is her boyfriend Dex and their secret hideout in an old building. When the rules at their school become even more stringent, Marena decides to start acting out with Dex and new student Eric, hoping to attract the attention of one of the anti-government groups. They sneak out at night and paint their messages on the streets and in the school and vandalized government property. Marena feels that this is what her mother would have done in her place.
This book is a fairly straightforward dystopian novel and anyone who has read more than a few will be able to see where this book is going, plot twists and all. However, it is well-written and a very suspenseful read. Marena is a good main character and Devita spends time exploring her relationships with Dex and her family and setting up her motivations for defying the government. A good book for anyone interested in dystopian future stories.
