After serving in the army, Pete Hallam returns to Devon School to find it untouched by the war that has torn the world in the past years. The students, however, are far from unchanged- the war has touched them all, prompting them, particularly one young Nazi-admirer, to see the world in new and, to Pete, frightening ways. This results in downright enmity among the students exploding in Pete's American History class.

My honors English class read A Separate Peace this year, much to the disgust of my classmates, but I liked it (as you can see, or I would not have gone on to read another book by the author). I checked Peace Breaks Out out of the library when we were wrapping up our A Separate Peace unit, then devoured it. I loved Devon School, the characters were all but alive, and the deeper message of the book was meaningful.

I can't understand why my classmates hate this author so...
