Then Tim falls hard for Helena—a worldly and mysterious twenty-two year-old. Their relationship opens his eyes to life outside the small town of Mattoon, Illinois. Now Tim has to choose: Will he settle for being a small town hero, or will he leave it all behind to follow his dreams?
When I started reading this book, I almost stopped after the characters where given a drunken party after graduation with the alcohol supplied by their own parents. However, I trudged ahead and found this a rather good read. You do have to wade through some obscenities and quite a bit of sexual overtones, but this really is a pretty true to life story of average teen life.
The story is told through the eyes of Tim Temples who has just graduated from high school and is taking a factory job over the summer, before heading off to college in the fall. His small town of Mattoon is filled with some quirky but memorable characters whom every reader will relate too. From his brief affair with the hardened by life Helena, which Tim thinks has lasting power to the quirky "four horsemen" who are only growing old and working their days away at the factory.
The characters in this tale will keep you completely riveted from beginning until end.
