Since the day her father's fishing boat returned without him, Peri and her mother have mourned his loss. Her mother sinks into a deep depression and spends her days gazing out at the sea. Unable to control her anger and sadness any longer, Peri uses the small magic she knows to hex the sea. And suddenly into her drab life come the King's sons-changelings with strange ties to the underwater kingdom-a young magician, and, finally, love.

This short book focuses on a young girl who lives by the sea with her mother who's not herself. In her world, magic exists and can be found in people and in the sea. The young girl meets a magician, and finds a man from the sea, and her life changes forever.
For some strange reason, this book is not my favorite. McKillip's prose is descriptive and beautiful as always, but the plot seemed a bit simple. I never had a sense of what the book was about until the very end.

Thsi book was not my favorite. I thought it kind of boring actually. I mean making Peri fall in love with the prince but make it so she can't have him was kind of... I don't know. I did like it that she help the real son of the king and queen though.

"The Changeling Sea" is about Periwinkle, a fifteen-year old chambermaid of an inn in her fishing village. Her father died at sea, and her mother is almost completely closed off from her. Peri mostly lives at the house of an old woman that she hasn't heard from in a while. Occasionally she'll go home and stay with her mom for a little while. When the Prince comes to the village with his father, Peri finds him at the beach. He feels he belongs in the ocean. When he finds out Peri is going to put a hex on the sea, he asks her to deliver a message to it from him. She does and a sea monster appears. A magician is called for help and what unfolds is a story that turns Peri's whole world upside down.
I liked stories that have a lot of surprises, but still has a happy ending, and this is one. I love the sea and this is one reason I love this book. It has plenty of romance too.
