The River Between Us
When 2 mysterious young New Orleans women come to board with 15-year-old Tilly's family, she is intrigued and curious. Did Delphine and Calinda plan on stopping here? Is Calinda Delphine's servant-- or her slave? But Tilly also has other things on her mind, like worries for her younger sister Cass, who sees ghosts, and for her twin brother Noah, who is intent on going to war. When Noah finally leaves, Tilly's mother sends her and Delphine to fetch him home again, a journey that reveals much about Delphine's true nature and eventually ends in tragedy.
This book presented an intriguing perspective on the Civil War, and the last few pages, told from the perspective of the grandson of the protagonists, was a real shocker. However, the characters of Tilly and Noah were so flat that the novel was not as good as it could have been.
