The Darkest Corners is a psychological thriller about the lies little girls tell, and the deadly truths those lies become.

There are ghosts around every corner in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine and has been trying ever since not to think about it after what happened there that last summer. Memories of things so dark will burn themselves into your mind if you let them.

Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn’t have to walk those same halls, but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the faces of her demons—and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they’ll disappear for good.

Tessa and Callie have never talked about what they saw that night. After the trial, Callie drifted and Tessa moved, and childhood friends just have a way of losing touch.

But ever since she left, Tessa has had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette—to Wyatt Stokes, sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie’s dead cousin; and to the one other person who may be hiding the truth.

Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer—and this time, it won’t be so easy to run away.

THE DARKEST CORNERS is full of suspense and is a thriller that makes your heart race. Tessa was hoping to keep Fayette and its inhabitants in the past after her friend was murdered, but returns to say goodbye to her dying father who's in jail. While there, her mind wanders to Wyatt Stokes--the man she testified against in her friend's murder trial. Now that she's older, she believes the wrong man is in jail and the killer is still on the loose.

While searching for the truth, Tessa begins to look for her sister Joslin or her mother. Both of whom she hasn't seen since she was a little girl. They vanished from her life without a reason. But with each answer she finds, another question or two develops. With the help of her childhood friend Callie, Tessa starts putting together the solution, but it seems they it leads to more danger for both of them.

This isn't the type of story I usually read, but I really enjoyed it. I loved Tessa's strength even though her confidence needs a boost. She's gone through so much but is still able to keep her head up. I loved the mystery within the story and I had no idea who the killer of her friend could be until they revealed it.

Final Verdict: I usually try to figure out who the killer is before the main character does, but I loved that this story kept me guessing. I recommend this to fans of suspense, thriller, and mystery.

Ever read one of those books where you feel like you’re watching a cool movie as everything plays out in your head? The Darkest Corners is exactly that book. It’s gripping from the start and definitely a page-turner.

The story starts with Tessa boarding a flight to Pennsylvania to visit his father, which brought back memories of everything that happened surrounding the death of her friend’s cousin Lori.

This is pretty much one of the best and solid YA thrillers I’ve read in a while. It actually left my heart pounding as I finished reading it. I’m not the best fan of suspense/thrillers but I know one when I see one. The book is so enjoyable and creepy at the same time, especially when everything starts to unfold. I had a bit of a problem with the pacing because it seems a bit slow at first.

I love how the book remained unpredictable until the end. Kara Thomas’s writing style is on point, I think she’s written for TV before and I’m glad she translated that skill into the novel. It’s like the book is build to be seen on screen. I’d definitely watch the hell out of this book if they make a movie from it.

The emotional growth of the characters is also one of the best things about this one. Tessa and her best friend Callie, were distant when the story started. However, as the story progressed, they eventually made up. The two were linked as primary witnesses in Lori’s death, which sent Wyatt Stokes to prison. But there’s more to the story, which of course I’m not going to discuss, but I loved how the whole thing panned out. Each crazy twist and turn added the fear factor in the book, especially towards the end. Events were too climactic, it left me speechless and out of breath.

Romance isn’t a big thing in the book but I adored Decker, Tessa’s friend. There’s a big potential between the two and the chemistry is great but I’m actually glad with the way how they remained just friends. The book focuses more on friendships and family relationships which I really appreciate.

The book has a dark tone overall, it seems like I was watching an episode of Twin Peaks, or those kinds of crime investigation shows, or even listening to an episode of Serial. It’s just too gripping and haunting, I bet it’ll bug your head for a long while. The ending is pretty solid too. Plus the epilogue is fantastic, it feels like it’s a post-credit scene in a movie. I definitely recommend this book if you’re out looking for a good thriller.

"By the last page,
there will be no one left to trust...."

Wow...just WOW...I am usually a fantasy or romance type of reader but when I read the synopsis for The Darkest Corners....something just told me that I HAD to read it! and I was not disappointed! I literally could not put this book down. Kara Thomas's writing is mesmerizing and makes the characters so real and I absolutely loved Tessa's character. Tessa is so strong and has been through so much and yet has not given up on finding the truth...She knows that she and Callie missed something all those years ago and she knows there is still answers and secrets to be uncovered so she is not giving up till she gets to the bottom of it.

The Darkest Corners is a young adult murder mystery that is centered around two main characters, Tessa and Callie. Ten years before, it was Tessa and Callie's testimony that put the "River Monster" behind bars for murdering young girls in their hometown. Tessa's older sisters friend, Lori, was the last victim and Tessa and Callie were home the night she disappeared and testified in the case that put the "assumed killer", Wyatt Stokes, behind bars. The Ohio River Monster is described as a serial killer because he chooses young girls who are going through bad times and making bad choices and when he kills them he always leaves their bodies near the river in the same vicinity of each other.

The story begins ten years after the arrest when Tessa receives a call that her father, whom is in prison in her hometown, is dying and wants to see her before he passes away. Tessa is invited to stay with her old best friend, Callie, and when she arrives back in town she begins to have memories of her past and begins to question what she and Callie told the police all those years ago.

"Every now and then another answer to what happened that night sneaks in from the darkest corners of my mind. I usually squash it like a mosquito--there's no point dwelling on questions no one can answer for me.
But now that I'm here, I can't ignore certain things any longer.
There are worse things in this world than monsters, and somehow, they always manage to find me."

The Darkest Corners is an intense murder mystery with so many twists and secrets and I literally found myself staring at the pages in disbelief. I was completely obsessed with this story and figuring out the truth. Stories regarding family secrets are always so fascinating and you never know what is going to happen and who a person really is.....

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery, family secrets, and uncovering the truth. I absolutely loved this book and am really looking forward to Kara Thomas's next book. I LOVED the intensity of Kara's writing and how her characters are so full of emotion, so REAL, and they drew me in and captivated me until the very last page.
