What waits Beneath? Pat O'Toole has always idolized his older brother, Coop. He's even helped Coop with some of his crazier plans -- such as risking his life to help his big brother dig a tunnel underneath their neighborhood in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Coop is . . . different. He doesn't talk on the phone, doesn't use email, and doesn't have friends. He's never really cared for anything but the thrill of being underground and Pat. So it's no surprise to anyone -- even Pat -- that after a huge fight with their parents, Coop runs away. Exactly one year later, Pat receives a package containing a digital voice recorder and a cryptic message from his brother. He follows the clues to New York City, and soon discovers that Coop has joined the Community, a self-sufficient society living beneath the streets. Now it's up to Pat to find his brother -- and bring him home.

Roland Smith has once again found an intriguing setting and fast paced action to keep readers, young and old, turning the page with anticipation. Beneath takes place deep under the city of New York. It is beneath the bustling streets of NYC that secrets of our nations past, lost remnants of eras long since gone are hidden and kept secret. Only those lucky enough to be invited can understand. Venture beneath without being invited can only bring danger.

There is so much to love about this novel (can I count the ways)! The unique plot and twists along the way make this is a great read for every kind of reader (from reluctant to avid). Smith seamlessly weaves historical facts about history and NYC while adding to his wondrous plot! Beneath also shines a light on the mountains of garbage humans produce in their frenzy to accumulate goods, while throwing away enough food in one day, to feed a small nation. Smith seamlessly creates a real, relatable relationship between Pat “Meatloaf” and Coop. Every character has their own story and each are intertwined with the other. Pat’s journey is not only an adventure but a heart-pounding experience that leads to endless questions, life or death decisions, and as Pat travels deeper underground he is lead to a path of self discovery.

What I didn’t like? While I love Smith’s writing style; the fast pace created by the short chapters, the interesting facts about the NYC underground, and the incredible storyline, I didn’t want the book to finish! I want to know more about these fascinating characters. Maybe there will be a sequel?

Pick up Beneath by Roland Smith. What a wonderful way to start my 2015! Read Beneath and you wont be disappointed.
