Tom Harvey was an average teenager from South London until a head on collision with high technology. What he discovers is that this collision has turned him into an actual App and the fragments from the iPhone are embedded into his brain. Noe Tom knows and can do more than any normal kid ever could.

With theses new powers he now has a choice. He can avenge Lucy, the girl he has loved for as long as he can remember. He can become a modern day super hero vigilante. Or, he can play it safe and keep his powers a secret.

“ The end may justify the means as long as there is something that justifies the end.” Leon Trotsky (Brooks 2011)

Last year, a student of mine came into class and asked “ Wouldn’t it be cool if we had apps in our head?”. It lead to a very interesting discussion. By the end, he did add, “ We could all have the dictionary app in our head. We would always spell words correctly and know their meanings.”
When I saw the book trailer for iBoy, it instantly took me back to that conversation. The narrator Tom Harvey was just a typical teenager living in London. He had “no problems, no secrets, no terrors”, no story to tell until the accident. Tom Harvey had a head on collision with an iPhone. It is only after he has recovered that he realizes he has turned into a human app.
Tom Harvey now has a secret and a story to tell. Above all, he has a mission. His best friend Lucy was attacked the night of Tom’s accident. With all the gang activity in the neighborhood, people are afraid to talk, afraid to give information. Tom knows he is the only one that can help. He can be iBoy. He can be her hero. But Tom has a lot to struggle with on his quest. With his new powers, does he seek justice or does he seek revenge?
Kevin Brooks gives the 21st Century a brand new type of super hero. The fast-pace nature of the book keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. I couldn’t put the book down, I just had to find out what would happen next. Personally, I enjoyed how Keven Brooks created an interactive action novel. He includes websites and real world sources to help move the story along.
Good Points
Fast paced and full of action.

Tom Harvey, a 16-year old teenager, in south london gains amazing abilities after an assault on his friend lucy leaves him with pieces of i-phone embedded in his brain. He then uses his abilities to punish the ones responsible for the attack on his friend. As he becomes increasingly adept at manipulating his powers the lines between good and evil become more and more blurred for both him and the reader.

The author uses first-pesron narrative in to bring us closer to Tom's thought's and emotions. The anger with the attack, and confusion he feels with his newly gained powers are all there. The book brings us closer to both Tom and Lucy by paralleling Tom's struggle to gain control over his powers and Lucy's attempts to come to terms with her attack.
This book is definitely not for the faint at heart. It is an emotionally powerful, gripping read.

Age Group: 16 and up
content: several curses (F... and Sh..) included, several references to the assault on Lucy, several incidences of violence, references to drugs and alcohol.
disclaimer: book was obtained through contest at yabookcentral
