Thora's the daughter of a magician but she can't do spells. Oddo's the son of a farmer but he can't do farmwork. Both of them think they're not good for anything. But when there's no one else left, the two young Vikings have to make a dangerous trek to a far-off place, using all their skills to get home safely.

The first book in Anna Ciddor's Viking Magic trilogy has excitement, adventure and sorcery as well as lots of interesting details about everyday life in Viking times. The plot is thrilling and teaches useful lessons about finding your place when you feel you don't fit in anywhere. The characters are very true to life, especially the two protagonists and Thora's family members, and kids will find the dialogue and narration fascinating and easy to follow. Runestone is a fantastic book and I can hardly wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
