This is a series review! I hope I dont spoil any of the fun, but here is a brief synopsis of each book.
In Uglies, Tally, a fifteen year old living in a culture where people are turned Pretty at age sixteen, there-by gaining the respect and elite privileges of Prettiness. Tally and Shay are two rebellious best friends, one of which, Shay, decides to go and join The Smoke, a band of outlaw uglies who insist on staying that way. When the head of the rumored Specials sends Tally out to find The Smoke and end their rebellion Tally is sure she can fulfill her mission, if for no other reason than to become Pretty! What Tally finds is a camp dedicated to preserving the old ways, ways that destroyed the world once before, but are somehow very freeing and yes, beautiful in its own way. When Tally meets David, an ugly, born and raised outside of Tallys Pretty-centered society she begins to really see herself and this is the tipping point of her new found self-respect.
*Uglies Spoiler Alert!*
In Pretties Tally is finally one of the many, brain-washed beauties that in-habit her Pretty-City. She is in a group called the Crims with Shay and Peris. Zane is the pretty leader of their little group, intent on staying Bubbly! As Tally and Zanes romance continues to grow and their bond deepens with the mutual knowledge of the nano-pills Tally continues to shake the legions that plague her mind and remembering the way things once appeared to Tally becomes easier and easier.
*Pretties Spoiler Alert!*
Specials begins with an epic party bust, better than the first two! Shays special Specials, The Cutters, are off to find the Smokies infiltrate spy and expose their tricks. The reader has the unique experience of seeing this society through the eyes of an protagonist turned antagonist. As a Special, Tally begins her journey by intimidating others and believing herself to be superior to all of those around her, even her boss Shay and her love, Zane, who is barely hanging on, unable to fully heal from the brain damage the nanos have caused him. Tally does find her way back to herself in time to fight against her society in the Diego War, but at what cost?
Extras is the fourth in the series, and quite possibly the final in the saga. This book is told from the perspective of Aya, a Japanese kicker in the time after the mind-rain. Tally is an immortal in this society, and everyone wants a piece of her high face rank. Kicking, or reporting, on oddities around the city is the fastest way to popularity. Lucky for Aya Fuse she has a story that could make her even more popular than Tally, but what will it mean if she exposes what she believes to be the truth behind a storage facility high in the mountains and the presence of strange, glowing creatures?
The UPSE Saga is a personal favorite, lets just get that out of the way. All four sit proudly on my Mod Podge Bookshelf, along with the companion novel, aptly named, Bubbly to Bogus. Tally is also one of my very favorite heroines, I want to be Tally, if only for the complications her society places upon her shoulders and the way she overcomes them from within. Her problems never have the most tidy endings, instead rolling over into the next novel, all dependent on who her society will create next, using her body and brain as their personal playground.

The Toys in these Scott Westerfeld books are so cool! Even being a girl, I want to ride a hover board! I love Tally's relationshipss with Shay, Zane and David. Ill say it now, Zane is my literary love in this novel. There is just something so self-sacrificing about his character, and Tally really loves him, I mean really, really loves him.

The chilling ends of the Diego War in Specials are still tingling inside me as I imagine the scene Westerfeld painted so vividly, so painfully.

Extras is my least favorite, I wanted in equal parts to experience a new world and go with Tally on a new adventure, letting her and Davids new relationship go less unnoticed. I really didnt feel like these desires were completely met, though the characters were still great, the plot lacked something Specials had left hanging- so perfectly- in the air, what with Tallys final warning to the world at the end of the third novel. Well, perhaps I will get my wish completely fulfilled eventually, I think I would love a fifth book from Davids perspective, going back to being in an Uglies mind after the Mind-Rain would be so cool!

My favorite, as you may have guessed is Specials, I cant even talk about it anymore without spoiling, what I feel you need to experience, in the moment. Pretties and Uglies are both amazing companions to each other, they are so different from the last two, which is the magic of these books. Though Westerfeld remains in one mind throughout the first three novels each time Tally goes under the knife your own perceptions of Tallys world change, along with the vernacular, the tone of the novel and the body you are inhabiting as you tackle the world with Tally. Read these books!
A word on the covers: They are all so cool, though I think Aya looks too cool, almost Special in a way. I get that an Extra is different than an Ugly, but I wanted something less sexy, less powerful, but secretive from Aya. Tally on the Specials cover is well, lets just say it, shes Icy! I dont like the Pretties cover at all, but the Uglies cover is what caused me to delve into the books in the first place. There is that sense of mystery to self, you know that Tally isnt even aware of her self, or her strength because she is hiding among all the greenery. Bubbly!
What is in a name? You know what I think the coolest name is in these books? Its Shays nickname, which in this society is Shay-la; I think Shayla is so pretty! Tally is super cool and you come to appreciate it as you read. Zane is also pretty Bubbly.

This is a story that will leave you asking questions about what ugly really means and thinking about how much stock is put into being pretty to be accepted. Tally is ready to turn pretty for her 16th birthday. Then she meets Shay and they become fast friends. Shay and Tally hoverboard around and have different opinions on becoming pretty, Tally can't wait and Shay is against it. Shay tells Tally about a mysterious boy named David and Shay runs away before her sixteenth birthday to join David outside of the city. Tally stays behind, becoming pretty is what she has been looking forward to. However, a special tells Tally that they will not allow her to become pretty unless she helps them find Shay. What follows tests Tally's sense of loyalty and secrets are revealed to her. There were a couple of surprises in this book, things I wasn't expecting that made me wonder about the perspective of pretty vs. ugly. It is a very good book that left me urgently wanting to read Pretties.

Do you ever wonder what life would be like if everyone looked like a super model? What would it cost people to become so stunning? Well, Tally Youngblood lives her life waiting for her 16th birthday, waiting to have a beauty operation following by a life of luxury. However, her new best friend, Shay isnt looking forward to the operation and decides to run away. The authorities want Tally to find her for them. Forcing Tally into a tough decision, the authorities manipulate Tally into betraying Shay by threatening to make her stay ugly forever. Once Tally ventures out in the wild, and meets people who live there, she discovers Shays reason for leaving the city, and a disturbing cost it takes to become pretty. You should read Uglies because its only the beginning of futuristic series with a strong meaning to it. First of all, you should read Uglies because it begins an enthralling, suspenseful trilogy that will have your brain thirsty for more. The author, Scott Westerfeld uses very descriptive words to paint a picture in the readers mind. In addition to that he makes the readers feel like theyre in the main characters shoes in a whole new world with futuristic devices and a whole new prospective on life. Lastly, Uglies has a strong purpose and meaning to it. The lesson taken by Tally is that it doesnt matter what people look like on the outside, its whats inside that counts. Its extremely suspenseful when the authorities track her down and hover cars are everywhere. The Smokies stay strong, but they are no match for the authorities, and are taken to the city, where some have the operation, while others are stay locked up at Special Circumstances. However, the adventure, betrayal, heart aches have only just begun.

Who knew that people wanted to stay ugly, given the choice to not be ugly.

The Pretty society deals with equality, but I am afraid to tell you, that hasn't and will never happen. You always have people who don't follow that rule (aka SPECIALS).

I love the hoverboarding, the Smoke...isn't a place where I want to live, BUT I want to live with those people. David...I don't know how she fell in love with him, but she did.

You see more fully at the end the effect of the legions in the Pretty brains when Shay comes back saying everything was ok. Like a girl is okay with another girl--espically a friend--coming in and stealing her boyfriend.

Though in my opinion david should have never let that happen, if he didn't come on to and like Tally that would have never happened.

Good book though, I have read Pretties--the sequel--and on my way to the final and last book in the series Specials.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the first in the Uglies trilogy, is my absolute favorite book. The book takes place in the future, where an operation on your sixteenth birthday makes you beautiful. Tally, fifteen years old at the beginning of the book, is left alone in Uglyville after all her friends have already crossed the river to New Pretty Town, where they have joined the carefree life filled with parties, showing off their perfect new faces and reconstructed bodies. While awaiting her birthday, Tally befriends Shay, who happens to have the same birthday as her. However, Shay has a different perspective than most uglies, and doesnt see the operation as anything to look forward to. Instead, she believes that appearance isnt all that matters and that there is no reason to change the way everyone looks. So shortly before her birthday, Shay runs away and tries to convince Tally to join her. Unlike Shay, Tally wants to become a pretty like everyone else, and stays behind. But on the day of Tallys operation, Tally is surprised to find out that she wont be operated on unless she follows Shay and betrays the runaway settlement that Shay has joined. So using a set of instructions that Shay left behind for only Tally to understand, she follows with a tracker hidden in her necklace that she must activate once having arrived. However, once she has been at the settlement for a while, she isnt sure whether to activate the tracker or not. Because being pretty isnt as perfect as it appears, and the government has been hiding the horrible truth.
Not only does this book have a good dose of action, but it also has deep meaning and many topics that really make you think. For example, is a symmetrical face with perfect features really all that defines beauty?

"Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license - for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. IN just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world - and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever."

At first I thought this book was really boring and not all that well written, but the more I got into the plot the better it got. It might not be my favorite book, but its no slouch.

Uglies is one of those few books that you cant seem to put down till its all done. Once you finish this book you will want to go out and get the next installment. In Uglies a young girl Tally is waiting for her upcoming birtday so that she will be able to get surgary to become "pretty."

In Tally's world nobody is good enough till they have been turned "pretty." The pretty people even have a different part of town from the uglies. All of Tally's friends have already moved and become pretty and she has a few months till it is her turn.

Tally meets this girl named Shay one day and they become fast friends. Shay and Tally find out they have the same birthday and will be getting pretty together. Tally is so exsited about this but not Shay. Shay desides to run away to live in a place where you dont have to become pretty.

Tally is sad to see her friend go but is happy she will soon be able to see her other friends. But to Tallys Horror she is turned down for the operation. They tell Tally is cant become pretty unless she finds and turns in her friend Shay.

Tally leaves with all intentions of bringing Shay home but when she finds her friend she isnt so sure anymore if becoming pretty is what its all cracked up to be.

You wont be able to stop reading this book till its all done. and even then you will "NEED" to read the second and third one. I really enjoyed this book and so will you.
