Uglies (Uglies #1)
User reviews
I found Uglies while walking through borders and looking for a series of a story I could keep up with. I found the cover very interesting and picked it up. I had never heard about this book before and didn't know if it was in the genre of the books I like to read. After reading the first 50 pages i became interested in wanting to read more. I still wasn't sure if I liked it or not. But then i kept reading and then couldn't put the book down. to think about the future in that view point kept me very intersted. Its worth the read.
I have to start saying that this is probably my favorite cover of
all times. Really! I mean, you can guess by my blog that green is my
favorite color, so that has to do with it. But also, I've always love
half-face pictures, the tricky part is.. can you actually tell who it
is from it? Not really, its hard! But anyway, I love the cover art. Way
too much!!
The plot was terrific. This has been one of the best
scenarios that an author has managed to stick in my head. The whole
ugly-pretty thing, wow! What a concept! When I was not reading, I was
thinking about the book, the world, the story, everything. That's the
power of a great book. It was excruciatingly hard to stop reading. The
characters are great, I love Shay.
while to get me interested, but then I figured he has too much to
explain. The way Westerfeld makes you look at the world today, is
priceless. It has definitely been more than just a novel for me. It has
a message of equality that screams out of the story. I had never read
his books, but he just became one of my favorite authors.
Scott Westerfeld is one of the most talented authors of the 21st century! In Uglies, Tally has grown up to expect that when she turns 16 she will become pretty, just like the rest of the population. Her best friend has already turned 16, and now she's just biding her time. On her way back from sneaking to see her friend, she meets Shay. Shay is different from most teenagers and just wants to be her. She teaches Tally how to ride a hoverboard, and finally convinces her to move to The Smoke, an escape for uglies who want to stay ugly. After a long journey, she finally gets there, and starts to enjoy life as it should be. But then she is tricked into giving up the location of the Smoke and has to fight for her and her new friends' freedom. Filled with adventure, friendship, love, betrayal, and deceit, it'll keep you up all night!
I love this book.
The Uglies is about a society that has their children, at age 16, receive plastic surgery. Almost like a rite of passage into adulthood, and if you don't get the surgery, then you're considered ugly to the rest of society. I absolutely love dystopians, and I made sure I absolutely DEVOURED this book up. Scott Westerfeld is an amazing writer and the book is perfection and an easy read. If you haven't read The Uglies, then you need to.
I loved, loved, loved this book! Ithought that it was so cool how the author used his imagination to predict what could happen in the future, I think that it might be pretty acurate. I think that Tally is a really strong character, she holds fast to her beleifs that becoming a Pretty isn't necessary, she's fine the way she is. But she is the the one who volunteers to change when the other Uglies are in need of a Pretty on the inside to help them. I can't wait to read more!
This si a great sci-fi book, even if your not into that stuff. Meet Tally, a girl of the future after our society has collapsed....a future where at sixteen, everyone is made to look like a supermodel. The problem? Tally's friend, Shay, has decided she dosen't want to be pretty, and runs away. Now the athorities are telling Tally that if she dosen't find Shay, she won't ever turn pretty! But what Tally finds once she leaves her citys safe walls might be enough to make her never go back.
Tally and Peris have been best friends since before Tally can remember. Now that Peris is sixteen, Tally wont see him again for another couple of months. In Tallys world when you turn sixteen you get to be made pretty.
Tally lives in Uglyville and everyone that lives there is ugly. It isnt until your sixteen birthday that you undergo the operation that will turn you into a Pretty. Tally cant wait to be turned pretty for her thin lips to be lusciously full and her eyes to be beautifully spaced. Everyone gets to be pretty that way everyone has an equal chance.
Just before she is to have her operation Tally meets Shay who happens to share a birthday with Tally. But Shay isnt like Tally. She doesnt think that being ugly is all that bad.
Ultimately Shay decides to run away from Uglyville before her operation and join a possibly mythical city where everyone is ugly. But Shay cant convince Tally to join her, but finds away to show Tally the way if she would ever change her mind.
When Tally leaves for her operation something goes terribly wrong. They know that Shay has run away to the city of uglies called the Smoke. And they wont make Tally pretty unless she finds Shay and eventually lead them to the Smoke.
But once Tally finds the Smoke and lives amongst its people, will she want to betray them? Then she unexpectedly finds out a secret that they are keeping from the Pretties.
Scott Westerfelds first installment of the Uglies trilogy proves to be a captivating experience that will leave you wanting more even after you read the last page. Ive read other books by Westerfeld and I have to say this is defiantly my favorite. It is a futuristic sci-fi, but could totally be nonfiction in the distant future! The book was clearly thought provoking, yet entertaining. I will be reading Pretties very soon!
this book is amazing! i love the adventures that tally and shay go through and the futuristic technology(especially the hoverboards)! i totally can't wait to get specials in may!
