One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

Celebrating 10 years in print, this new edition of the popular teen drama features a soft, pastel cover, elastic band, and end page recipes, which I definitely needed because after reading about Lara Jean’s treats I was seriously craving some of my own.

Unlike most book fans, I actually watched the Netflix adaptation before reading the book, and I think my reading experience was better for it. I had a strong visual of the characters and a guide to where the action was going, which helped give direction to the middle chapters of the book, which explains a lot about Lara Jean’s thoughts, fears, and related drama that the movie didn’t really get to explore.

One of Lara Jean’s core values is her relationship with her sisters. As the middle child, she’s worried about one sister going away to college and the responsibility of watching over the other. My family is pretty similar, except I’m the eldest, and I found it very interesting to step into Lara Jean’s shoes and see the different perspective on a family’s growing up.

The story is told from Lara Jean’s perspective, and at times her personal drama can feel over the top. Most of the events that happen only contribute to the plot in that they give Lara Jean a new setting to work through her feelings. I guess I would have liked more external conflicts. However, I recognize that I’m also no longer a teen, and so some of Lara Jean’s worries just feel distant – things like anxiety when driving down the block, choosing a first day of school outfit, or picking seats on the bus.

Not everyone is just like Lara Jean, but I think many people will relate to pieces of her story.
