Aren't fairy tales much more fun when princesses don't do as they're told? Fans of Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted and Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles will love reading about Princess Meg and her attempts to sabotage her father's antiquated dragon-slaying, witch-vanquishing, bandit-eradicating contest (of which she, naturally, is the prize) in Kate Coombs' The Runaway Princess. With its witty, independent heroine, original supporting characters and quirky plot that cleverly bucks all fairy tale stereotypes (and contains some surprises and an unexpected but very satisfying ending), this is an unconventional tale that will bring smiles to the faces of all readers. It's a book I wish I had written myself, and there's no higher compliment.
