THE SELECTION, THE ELITE, and THE ONE are the prequels of THE HEIR. Out of the three books, it is THE SELECTION that is my favorite. However, after reading THE HEIR, I admit that it is my brand new favorite of the series. What can I say? Kiera Cass gets better with time, and she has a better foundation in THE HEIR than in THE SELECTION.
America and Maxon's romance is no longer in the front seat. Now, it is their oldest daughter (Eadlyn) who is about to get shot with a couple of arrows (ouch!). She is the girl in line to the crown. But all is not well in Illéa. The people are unhappy, even though the castes are gone. The rebels (who are much different from the rebels of the previous three books) are hating on the monarchy. Maxon, the king, is stressing out under the kingdom's weight. What seems to be the HEA (Happily Ever After) for America, Maxon, and the rest of the kingdom is a nightmare. Now, the next generation has to deal with the mess. Eadlyn is first in line to inherit, not just a kingdom, but also a hot mess.
Eadlyn is an absolute darling, despite her pride, haughtiness, and mostly unlikable ways. She is the future queen, and she has her strengths. She has her intelligence, she has her understanding (mostly), and she has time (that is running out). Through the book's progress, the ice queen (I mean, princess) melts. Convinced by her parents, she goes through her own Selection process and has three months to pick whoever she likes (or loves). Of course, she has a third option of not choosing a husband entirely. But when the heart (and boys) is involved, not everything is rainbow, gold, and sunshine.
It is different to be on the other side of the Selection. Eadlyn must prepare the rooms, look over the plans of the Selection, and make sure that everyone (and by that, I mean everyone in Illéa) is focused on the Selection instead of the country's problems and deep prejudice. Lots of issues, and Kiera Cass will have a couple loose ends to tie up in the last installment.
The ending of THE HEIR is one of the most surprising parts of the novel. I'm practically screaming and the book and wondering why it has to be cut off so unexpectedly. The sequel's release date is terribly far away.
Overall, THE HEIR is a startlingly good insight into Eadlyn's mind. Though the world building (especially in politics) isn't strong and revealing as it could have been, the story is wild and the conflict is seductive. There are a group of men waiting to be Eadlyn's future prince consort, which is a good opportunity for a betting game. (Who is up with me for Erik/Eadlyn?) I can't wait for the sequel, and I totally recommend THE HEIR to those who love The Selection and ABC's BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE.

I finished this book a few days ago and have been mulling over this review in my head since then. There were many things that I enjoyed about The Heir but I didn't feel myself connecting as much with this story as the previous installments.
What I liked: I liked seeing the Selection process through different eyes. Eadlyn has very strong opinions about everything--including the Selection. I think she grows a lot throughout the course of the book and she becomes more aware of the people that are surrounding her. I like her confidence but what I like even more is to see some of her walls break down (and this takes a while). I also really liked revisiting tidbits from Maxon and America's courtship. As fictional couples go, I'm really glad these two made it and are genuinely in love.
If you liked the world Cass created with the original trilogy, then you won't be disappointed with The Heir. Twenty years have passed but it still feels like the same place, granted there have been changes over time but it is still true to the first three books.
What left me wanting more: This is the part that I struggled with when I finished reading. I really wanted more focus on the relationships between Eadlyn and the guys. There were obviously some guys that stood out more than others but I felt like we didn't really know any of them that well.
Final Verdict: When this book ended, I wasn't ready to be finished with it. There is a lot left to be told in this story. I can't wait to see where it goes.

Well, I should start off by saying that I'm sure I wasn't the only person who had high hopes for this novel. I mean if you've read the other three and loved them the way I do. I was disappointed by this installment, Eadlyn is no America. This Princess starts out as a spoiled brat whom I wanted a smack every other page. She never thought of anyone else but herself. Her most important things in life were designing dresses and freaking hand massages. She was mean to everyone, even going so far as to feel ashamed for Kile's appearance and how it made her family look to be around that kind of thing.
I almost gave up on this book, I couldn't take much more of her, then enter Kile. I really like him and hope he or Erik wins, I won't be happy with any other. They are sweet and understanding and I love Kile for not being scared to call her out when she is being a bitch, which is a lot.
The plot is pretty much like the first part of the series, only Eadlyn is the first female to hold a selection and the way she goes about it you'd think her parents had demanded she go tap dancing in a mine field. She's rude to the boys and doesn't seem to care an ounce for them.
Slowly though, I watched her change little by little, I still wanted to smack her sometimes but it got better, she got better. I know some people are happy that she isn't as wishy washy as her mother was but I understood why America was that way and I sadly can understand why Eadlyn is such a spoiled brat... though I'm so angry at Maxon and America for raising her to be that way. Her twin brother, Ahren, seemed to be so much better till he eloped. Ugh, this book is a hot mess sometimes and just a plain mess other times, will I be reading the next one? Yes, but only for Kile or Erik, this though is nothing like the first and it makes me so sad.

This book is such an awesome one! I was really sad when I finished reading the one and I thought the Selection was over. But it wasn’t and the Heir is amazing. Just like in the selection book, this one was full of princes, princesses, queens, kings.
The heir isn’t about America Singer, but about her and Maxon’s daughter Eadlyn Schraeve. I actually really enjoyed reading from her point of view. Eadlyn is to-be queen, the first queen of Ilea ever and I loved how she thought about her being so powerful and her opinion of feminism and not needing a husband. I always hated those books where there is this girl who has to be saved by the cool badass boy who is perfect. I understand her wanting to be just ruling by herself.
In the selection books you are reading from America’s point of view, who participates in the selection and secretly doesn’t want to, Eadlyn secretly doesn’t want to marry anyone. I love seeing how similar they are based on personality. I actually hoped Eadlyn would be a redhead like Mer tho. A big difference between America and Eadlyn is the selfconfidence Eadlyn has, but America hasn’t. Eadlyn is such a cool character, but I miss reading from America’s point of view.
The new characters added were too cute. I love how strong the bond between Eadlyn and her twin brother Ahren is. Also the kids from miss Marlee and Woodwork are so funny, especially Josie is! I totally love her and KYLE KYLE KYLEEEE I LOVE KYLE WOODWORK SO SO SO MUCH. But guys, excuse me, I fell in love with like all the boys participating like oh my god, how cute are they askskaaskhweik. I love Erik, he is so adorable, sweet and caring and also goodlooking and I totally ship him with Eadlyn. Henri is also pretty awesome, but it isn’t practical he only speaks Swendish. Kyle and Eadlyn are also pretty cute together, although I don’t think they will end up together.

I really adore the Selection series. Kiera Cass has created an amazing world in this series and I always want to read more! And The Heir has left me wanting just that, more!!
I think Eadlyn is a really strong character. She does have an attitude, for sure, but she has a kind and caring heart which makes her strong. I also think she takes after America in her decision making. I think her Selection is going well and the Selected boys have great variety.
I strongly suggest this book AND series, if you haven't read them all yet! (:

MY THOUGHTS
I admit, The Selection series is one of my guilty pleasures, so I was excited to read this spin-off. It wasn't as amazing as The Selection series, mostly because I can't ship anything yet, but this was a really great start to another series!
This book is set roughly twenty years after the events of The Selection. Eadlyn has been raised knowing that she will one day be Queen. A rise in rebellion and Eadlyn's life is change when her parents decide that the citizens need a distraction. The perfect distraction being another Selection. Eadlyn wants nothing to do with The Selection, but she has to put up with all of these boys with the idea that she might marry one of them. Romance is the furthest thing from her mind.
What I find very interesting about this book is I just loved getting to see the selection from the selector's point of view. It would've been interesting from a guy's perspective, but it may be even more interesting seeing things from a female perspective, when the Selection has never been female run.
Kiera Cass seems to write unlikeable female characters. America wasn't very popular and Eadlyn also has her flaws. I saw her as very spoiled and a bit of a brat. This is understandable, considering that she was raised as royalty and raised to be Queen, but it was a bit annoying. Though, based on how other characters saw her, it seems that Eadlyn is supposed to come off as a brat, so it doesn't bother me too much. I also strongly believe that she will change throughout the series, so I look forward to that.
As for romance, there wasn't really any. This book mainly introduces us to all the potential suitors, so there isn't yet a romance. There are a few people that I might try to ship, but I can't really have an actually ship quite yet. Though, I do like Henri! He's not really shippable, but he's probably one of my favorite characters!
Lastly, and this is why I am disappointed with this book, the ending sucked. The ending, while it will be important for the next books, felt like it was just placed there just to have a cliffhanger ending. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the book and it was completely upsetting.
IN CONCLUSION
Despite some of my misgivings, I did enjoy this book! I like many of the suitors and, mostly, I can't wait to start shipping! Eadlyn is a bit of a brat, but I expect her character to grow as the series goes on. The ending sucked and it really hurt my thoughts on this book. I might just recommend readers to wait to read this until the next book comes out, unless that one ends in an equally awful cliffhanger...

Until it is.
The Selection series has been one that I found got better as it went along. The writing and the characters were noticeably different from the first book to the third, and now with this new addition and the twist of it being a female-led Selection process, there was so much to enjoy. It was still an easy read, like the others in the series, but Eadlyn was such a different character from either of her parents and I felt a better sense of who the guys were as characters earlier on than I had with the girls from The Selection.
I liked Eadlyn as a character. She could come off as spoiled, maybe a little bratty at times, but I could see her point in a lot of ways. If she was going to be forced to hold a Selection, she needed guys involved who would respect her and if they couldn’t handle her being harsh, no way would they handle being a prince. It was interesting to see her slowly come around to liking some of the guys instead of working against the whole process and learn more about what it was going to take of her to one day run the country.
