From Daniel Bernstrom, the acclaimed author of One Day in the Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus Tree, comes a charming and irresistibly fun picture book about a young blind girl and her grandmother who experience the vibrant everyday music of their busy city.
A young girl, filled with the sounds of her beloved city, shares a song with her grandmother that changes the two forever. After helping Grandma realize that the city makes music as beautiful as the sounds they hear in church on Sunday morning, the two sit down and take in all the sounds of the city…together.

Song in the City bridges the gap between generations of music and family, while centering love, understanding, and joy.

As a young blind girl and her grandmother stroll down the city streets, the girl hears beautiful music all around her. But the grandmother doesn't hear a thing and grows frustrated as they try to understand each other. When they arrive at church, the grandmother insists that they're playing music, but the little girl explains it's because she isn't listening to her. She makes her grandmother cover her eyes and only then does she start hearing the music of the city.

SONG IN THE STORY is a beautiful story about a girl who grows to love the sounds around her even though she can't see well. Her grandmother struggles to understand her throughout the whole book, but the girl doesn't let it deter her. The grandmother can't hear it because she's looking with her eyes, not listening with her ears. So often do we forget to enjoy the magic around us because we grow accustomed to it or focus too deeply on the task at hand. If only we would take the time to slow down and listen, we can hear the music too. The illustrations are so vibrant and full of life, lust like the city. In the back of the book is a little extra bit of musical history for children to enjoy with some important lessons.

Final Verdict: SONG IN THE CITY is an endearing and thought-provoking book that teaches children to appreciate the things around them and to take the time to enjoy life. I love the diversity and multigenerational focus of this book.
