In this beautifully illustrated picture book from Lara Hawthorne, a mysterious creature from a secluded volcano crater explores the outside world for the very first time.

Ratty is an enormous rat who lives deep inside the crater of an extinct volcano nestled in the rain forest. One day, he spies a particularly delicious-looking fruit high in the treetops and sets out to reach it. From this high vantage point a spectacular view stretches before him—the world outside his mountain crater. In this big outside world, Ratty imagines, the fruit must be much sweeter, the bird songs more beautiful, and the other animals far more interesting and sophisticated. So he sets off in search of better things. But when he is asked to attend a dinner party by a crocodile who seems just a bit too friendly, Ratty realizes that perhaps there is no place like home after all.

Lara Hawthorne seamlessly combines story and fact in this picture book that celebrates the diversity of life and being thankful for what you have!

Ratty is a large rat who lives in a volcano in the rainforest. One day, he spots a delicious looking fruit and sets forth to retrieve it. When he does, he notices how vast the world is and wonders what other delicacies could be out there waiting for him to discover. As he sets off, the others warn him that it's a dangerous world out there, but he doesn't listen. It isn't until he's faced with challenges himself involving predators that he realizes his home is perfect and he doesn't need more.

RATTY'S BIG ADVENTURE is an engaging story that teaches the moral that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. The illustrations are simple with a darker color tone. In the back of the book, there's more information on the setting of the story (Mount Bosavi) and on the Bosavi Woolly Rat. My daughter loves look and finds so the "did you spot" section had her flipping back through the book to find each animal.

Final Verdict: Overall this is an interesting story that teaches an important lesson while keeping children engaged. I would recommend it to fans of animals and adventure.
