Pretties is the sequel to the novel called Uglies. In the second book we learn that after Tally has turned pretty she has become dim witted. She senses sometimes that something is wrong but she can't pinpoint it, after all what could matter more than being pretty and being a Pretty? What else is there right? These are questions that are planted in her mind like weeds always pulled before they have time to make sense. That is until she meets Zane. Zane is the leader of group of Pretties called Crims. Crims are short for Criminals and the group [prides themselves in the tricks they pulled when they were Uglies. Zane sees something in Tally and talks her into seeing beyond "Pretty thinking" He kisses her to keep her "bubbly" (a term that doesnt have a definite definition but tends to mean realistic or awake as in, in touch with reality). Tally and Zane realize that by keeping one another bubbly they can think clearly and the lucidity that came after becoming a pretty goes away but only temporarily. While at a Pretty part Tally sees and recognizes an old Ugly friend who leaves her a note that was written by her before she was Ugly. IT explains to her that she chose to turn pretty knowing the risks of becoming basically brainwashed so she could try out the cure. There are two pills and in a desperate attempt to avoid being caught by the wardens who have discovered she and Zane are on taboo property she takes one of the pills and so does Zane. For a while, everything is fine... until Zane starts getting horrible headaches. Something is wrong and its up to Tally to find out what or else Zane could die. Tally must choose the price of freedom and her boyfriend's life.
