From the very beginning, this story and it’s main character reads as early teen. Alex, our main character, seems to base her decisions early on in the book on what she thinks will make her “cool”, or get her a boyfriend. Thankfully, as the story goes along, Alex evolves from an immature teen to a more mature, more responsible character that starts doing things because it makes her happy and she likes it, rather than what she thinks others like.

The timing in this book seems a little off. We don’t really know how much time really passes between chapters, and sometimes even in between passages. However, it seems to follow Alex well enough and covers some of the more important life experiences with her band(s), boys, friendships and everything else a girl her age goes through. Suffice it to say this book stayed true to itself and rang very realistic to a middle-grader/early high-schooler’s life.

Although the story itself was a bit short, there was a ton of extras in the book that keeps it fun and interesting. With a great story, removable tattoos, simple illustrations throughout, as well as directions for playing the guitar and writing song lyrics, this is a book that should definitely be checked out.
