In the town of Grimbaud, love fortunes are real. People line up in the street to get their fortunes from Zita’s love shop. Fallon Dupree is no different. She comes from a family who have always found love through Zita’s fortunes so Fallon is shocked when she gets hers – and it says she will never find love. She’s not the only one to get a bad fortune and the group of them are planning on fighting back against Zita and the hold she has on their town.
This book was really cute and fun to read. It really matched the cute and fun cover so well. It was easy to pick up and finish in a night, well-paced to be able to finish it in a day, and just really entertaining.
I really liked the main character of Fallon. It would have been easy for her to accept her fortune and go through the rest of her life never believing she’ll find love because that’s what Zita told her. I also liked that the story wasn’t just about Fallon and her group fighting against Zita but about Fallon discovering who she was as a person as opposed to who her family wanted her to be.
Fallon’s friends and the group of rebels who became her friends were all different and quirky. I really liked them all. Her two best friends, Anais and Nico, had some great moments with her that had me laughing, or thinking they were in desperate need of a hug depending on the situation. Player Sebastian was another great character and it was interesting to learn more about him and why he acted the way he did. There was definite chemistry between him and Fallon.
I would have liked to have seen some of the other characters explored a little more, or seen more with Fallon and her family and friends. There was a lot of concentration on the love fortunes and charms and rebellion, which was good, but I was missing some character interactions.
My favourite part of the book was Grimbaud itself. The descriptions of the town were so vivid and charming. It sounded like a place I would want to visit, do all the tourist things, explore all the little shops, meet the locals and hear their stories. The concept of the love fortunes being real and the whole mythology behind why they were right was something that really interested me and I didn’t want to stop reading until I found out the answer.
Overall, it was a really cute and entertaining book to read and I look forward to seeing what worlds the author creates next.
