This book immediately draws readers in with a continuation of an already exciting series. Maniscalco’s writing shines with vivid and beautifully rendered scenes that allow readers to easily visualize scenes, complete with lush scenery of each of the houses in Hell and descriptions of Emilia’s over-the-top outfits. Readers are provided greater insight into the relationships between all of the characters. Emilia and Wrath’s relationship deepens significantly in this book, building on their foundation and fully shifting from their dynamic of enemies to lovers. Readers also see how the princes have more of an intimate dynamic as well, not only as rivals but as brothers, complete with loyalty to each other underneath their rivalries.
Emilia demonstrates a lot of growth over the course of this book, struggling with the increase in her powers and how it impacts her humanity and values. As she becomes more powerful, it alters who she is, and she is forced to reevaluate who she wants to be and make a decision to remain rooted in fear or trust in herself and step out of her comfort zone.
While this is a book that is listed as appropriate for ages 16 and over, there are many extremely graphic sex scenes in the story. This could be a concern for some readers, especially since these scenes would be more expected in erotic fiction geared towards adults. These scenes appear throughout the story.
The fast pace, multiple plot twists, and various plot threads make this an intriguing and exciting read. Emilia works to solve multiple mysteries as she navigates a blossoming relationship, outside threats, and focuses on building alliances. This is the kind of book that is difficult to put down, and allows readers to see different sides of characters that aren’t quite how they initially appeared.
