Look through the cut-outs and guess who it is! First a game, then plenty of funny and interesting animal facts.

Find out how frogs survive in the desert, how otters have adapted to life in the water, and which bird can fly the highest. What other extreme conditions can animals survive? Thanks to the fun layout with cut-outs, at first only a part of the animal’s body is revealed on the page. Will the young reader be able to tell which animal that tail, that fur, or those legs belong to? All you have to do is open up the page and the animal appears in all its glory, with the child learning why the animal looks the way it does. So let’s get started!

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS: EXTREME CONDITIONS is a fun examination of the ways that animals have adapted to live in different conditions, such as extreme cold, the dark, high altitudes, and deserts. For instance, the first page spread asks which animal has the shaggy fur shown in a peek-through that keeps it warm in the frozen wonderland and in the icy ocean. Lifting the flap reveals a polar bear, along with other facts about the polar bear and its ability to live in the extreme cold. The facing page shows other animals that have adapted for life in the same climate, such as walruses and polar foxes.

What I loved: This is a really interesting examination of the ways different animals have adapted to live in extreme climates. The simple format will work well for young readers, giving basic facts about adaptations that give animals special skills to live in places that seem inhospitable. The flaps with peek-throughs add an engaging element with a light guessing game as children may guess which animal they see when they lift-the-flap. The oversized flaps are sturdy and engaging. The thick, board-book-style pages help younger readers to easily turn the pages and stand up to use over time. Colorful illustrations of so many different animals bring the fun facts to life throughout.

Because of the simplicity and overall brevity of the book, this would work well for older toddlers, preschoolers, and young elementary school readers. Considering the light board-book-style pages and oversized and sturdy flaps, this will help it to appeal to younger audiences.

Final verdict: An entertaining look at the ways animals live in harsh environments, ANIMAL ADAPTIONS: EXTREME CONDITIONS is a fun lift-the-flap read that teaches about unique ways animals have evolved to live in the dark, in deserts, and more. Recommend for older toddlers, preschoolers, and young elementary school readers.
