NELSON MANDELA is a biographical picture book about Nelson Mandela. The book features a poem to describe the basics of his life and his role in ending the apartheid. The illustrations are very realistic and depict Nelson Mandela at different stages in his life along with the story. The book also does a good job of setting up context for the way in which his life shaped him, including the places where he was educated and the apartheid itself.

What I loved: The illustrations here are really fantastic and do a great job of bringing the biography to life. The poem contains basic information in a rhythmic way that will appeal to elementary school-aged readers and would be a great book for use in classroom settings. The end of the book includes a more detailed biography, which is also helpful for deeper understanding. This is a great read for elementary schoolers and would be helpful to understand Mandela and the impact that he had, alongside other discussions about social justice, history, and people who make a difference.

Final verdict: A fantastic biography that makes Mandela's story understandable for elementary school-aged readers, NELSON MANDELA is a great choice for classroom or at-home learning with great illustrations and poetic text.
