With a wondrously simple die-cut book, the Caldecott Honor–winning creator of the Journey trilogy brings his talents further into the light.

This is the light that brings the day.

Open this beautiful book to find a graphic yellow sun surrounded by a halo of bright die-cut circles. Now hold the page up to the light and enjoy the transformation as the colors in those circles glow. In an elegant, sparely narrated ode to the phenomenon of light, Aaron Becker follows as light reflects off the earth to warm our faces, draws up the sea to make the rain, feeds all the things that grow, and helps to create all the brilliant wonders of the world, including ourselves.

This elegant board book is a celebration of light with a simple lyrical poem accompanied by die-cut colored circles. When held up to the light, it has a stained glass effect. Combined with the simple but lovely images on each page, this board book is beautiful for people of all ages.

Each page has several circles filled in with a color that overlap with other pages and colors to create the spectrum of colors apparent from the closed book. As such, it’s interesting to see them build together to create new colors. Whether held up to the light or not, this is a fun exploration of colors.

What I loved: The text to image ratio is great for young and short attention spans, and the rhyming phrases are as lovely for young ears as the images are to the eyes. Elegant and beautiful, this could be a coffee table book to be enjoyed by people of all ages. The book and colored circles are very sturdy, standing up to the roughest of young readers. The text explores the role of sunlight across the natural world including growth of food and flowers and impacts on the water in a simple, approachable way.

Final thoughts: This beautiful and elegant board book is enjoyable for many ages with developing and overlapping colors that shine through with light like stained glass. Accompanied by rhyming phrases of the impacts of light on the earth, this is a delightful and quick exploration for young readers that they will want to read again and again. I would recommend for young toddlers who will appreciate the sturdiness and fast pace.
