Join Max and his sister Lila as they navigate their synagogue's Chanukah extravaganza, "Chanu-Con!" Their day's highlights include making a human menorah, dipping Chanukah candles, tasting latkes and Chanukah treats, and dancing to festive music. A comic book style graphic children's book written in verse and inclusive of the Chanukah story with its deeper meanings, "Welcome to Chanu-Con!" is the first collaboration between Beth Rodgers, author and Chanu-Con! founder, and veteran children's illustrator, Howard Fridson.
Welcome to Chanu-Con!Featured
Max and Lila are celebrating Chanukah with their family at Chanu-con. They watch skits, play games, make crafts, and eat food all while learning--or rather teaching the reader-- more about Chanukah.
What I loved:
The story is written in a lyrical way that makes it truly a pleasure to speak aloud when reading to a kid. So few kid's books rhyme anymore and I loved the poetry of it. I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about Chanukah. I'm not Jewish and have known very few people who celebrate the holiday. So, even though I'm not a kid, I learned a lot of important things from this story too. It's important for us to know about traditions different from our own, so I believe this story is wonderful both for kids it relates to and to the ones it doesn't.
The artwork is completely adorable and engaging, keeping the kids enraptured until the very end. I also LOVED that there were crafts at the end.
A story to read over and over again this time of year that engages kids on many different levels.
