Yaro is faced with the daunting task of cracking the cryptic code to the Mystery Letter. With doubting nemesis Missy Ann breathing down his neck and reminding him he's no Sherlock Holmes, Yaro must prove his skills as a detective or risk the shame of becoming the laughing stock of his school and neighborhood. Missy Ann would take great great pride in ruining his reputation. With his trusted side kick Saidi by his side, will Yaro crack the code? Read this book to find out. Yaro the Super Sleuth in the Case of the Mystery Letter focuses on children identifying what their own natural gifts, talents, and abilities are. Illustrating that they can parlay their natural attributes into a career. Dr. Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory is used to emphasize this premise. Yaro dreams of being a detective when he grows up. Part of being a good detective is paying attention to details, documenting your observations, being a good listner and communicator, enlisting help when needed, and being a good judge of character, these are all of the factors that go into being a good detective. This book seamlessly merges goal setting, self-concept, self-discipline, problem-solving, the importance of family, and friendship into a humorous story. If you're looking for a wonderful teaching tool for your 'tween or early teen classroom, Yaro the Super Sleuth in the Case of the Mystery Letter, may be the perfect book for you.
Written by author and counselor Helen L. Edwards, Yaro the Super Sleuth is the story of a young detective who solves mysteries in his school and neighorhood. While solving these mysteries, he also notes and ponders the complex and sometimes baffling behaviors of the adults in his life, and shares his findings with his readers.
Edwards writes with the best of intentions and a whole lot of love as she tackles many complex subjects in this book. She explores how grown-ups behave across various settings, like home, church and school; the fears grown-ups may have that children never knew existed; the responsibilities grown-ups face; and the various ways adults try to please their children.
Because she tackles so many subjects, the final product is a book with multiple sub-plots that may make it a bit lengthy for very young children. Nevertheless, with the right teacher's creative guidance, this book can serve as a fun and useful tool in any home or classroom setting.
Be sure to add this one to your class library.
