In the fictional story of Merit the Greyhound, the reader learns about some of the unique characteristics of the greyhound breed and the racing industry. Greyhounds, the world's oldest and fastest breed, were worshiped by the Egyptians -Racing dogs must win or face an uncertain future. As events unfold Merit and her kennel mates recognize they are lucky to belong to Tom Coal, a kind and ethical dog trainer. In a twist of fate, Isabel and King, two retired greyhounds, help Merit and her kennel mates navigate the often cruel world of dog racing. Merit's extraordinary speed creates jealousy in the kennel. The greyhounds' fragility helps develop a love story between trainer Tom and veterinarian Carol. Merit breaks the rules and falls for a racing competitor and must fight to regain composure or risk separation from her teammates. King's coaching helps Merit save the other greyhounds when a fire breaks out at the track. Merit encounters her first cat, Swish--her sharp clawed, name calling, nemesis. A sudden event leads Swish and Merit to become allies. Finally, a dramatic crash on the track leaves a friend dead and Merit facing retirement.

I loved this book. At times I wished I could scoop Merit up into my lap and give him a kiss on his nose! I particularily liked how the author touched on the relationships between Merit and the dogs that came into his life, and at the same time we also learned about Greyhound racing! This book is an easy read and it is a lighthearted, happy & realistic look into the life of a racing Greyhound. I truely liked it!

This story was just fantastic.  It was very well written and kept me engaged the entire time.  It also sends a great message to people about caring for animals.  It shows the true depth of their emotions in a way that should appeal to kids and adults of all ages.

I loved this clever book. It is told through the eyes of Merit the Greyhound from when she first learns that she will have to leave her mother and siblings. Her mother explains to her  3 ways her life could possibly turn out, as a pet, a race dog, or a show dog. The book follows Merit as she becomes one of the fastest racers around, she meets new friends, some enemies, falls in love, and loses friends. The story is very well written and has so many great lessons given in touching ways that anyone at any age could understand and enjoy. I am a grown woman and several parts of the story hit home with me and I am sure that anyone can find some part of this charming story to relate to. I feel this book would be great for pre-teens and up since it has so many valuable lifes lessons in it and they are written in a honest heartfelt way.
