Mary's brother Jacques has finally settled down, marrying an Indian woman. Mary's father is so delighted with his new daughter- in- law, Little Cloud, that he gives Jacques the farm on Michilimackinac Island, the farm Mary always assumed would be hers. So outraged is she that, when her sister Angelique writes from London inviting her to visit, she promptly agrees and, with the help of Jacques, is soon sailing for England.

When I read the library's copy of Return to the Island a few years ago I knew I had to read its prequels, but it took me a long time to find copies- first of Once on this Island, then of Farewell to the Island. As a matter of fact, I got this book for Christmas last year and waited a while to read it, knowing from the other books in the series that it would be short but good- and it was. I suppose it would have been best if I had read the trilogy in order, but I have to say that I am glad I didn't.

This book reads "ages 9 and up" on the back but I feel that is ridiculous- Mary's age and the nature of the problems she faces make this a book for older teens.
