Fearing to make a sound that would attract attention and perhaps prevent his escape, Kris sits in the dark on the edge of his perfectly made bed. It is 4:25 AM. His most precious possessions have been secretly stored down the street with friends. Grandpa finally arrived yesterday, driving King Arthur, an eighteen-wheeler truck. What will he tell Grandpa? Will Grandpa believe Kris's own uncle means him harm? Will Kris's secret plan to leave his uncle's home and live with his grandparents, work? These agonizing questions swirl in Kris's head until he hears a soft sound in the hall and then watches the doorknob slowly, silently turn. Who is coming into his room? Is it his grandpa or his uncle? "Is it too late?"

Dragons for Kris is a great book for all young readers, but especially for boys. In this book, Kris is living with his aunt and uncle because his mother has died. He loves his aunt, but is seriously afraid of the uncle. He contacts his grandparents that live hundreds of miles away and the grandfather (a truck driver) picks Kris up without really knowing what the problem is. As Kris and his grandfather travel across the country in the semi-truck, Kris gradually begins to reveal his fears to his Grandpa. After Kris and Grandpa get to California, the situation with his aunt and uncle worsens, but the grandparents and another aunt step up to the plate and help her too.
The book is not all gloom and doom. There are interesting bits of information about the country they are passing through and several humorous incidents that kids can identify with.
I think this might be a good book for kids that have problems they don't know how to express to adults.
