Betsy Ross's Star (Blast to the Past #8)
When Mr. C tells the class they'll be learning about Betsy Ross, Abigail is confused. What could the "what-if" question be?
Turns out that no one knows for sure if Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag! But whether she did or not, the kids have a job to do -- Babs Magee is up to her old tricks and plans to take credit for sewing the flag. Abigail and the boys see this as their chance not only to stop Babs, but also to set history straight.
But once they start trying to figure out the truth, what they discover surprises them all....
Monday is Abigails favorite day of the week. To most, Monday means starting the long, dreaded week at school. For Abigail and her friends: Jacob, Bo, and Zack, Mondays mean history club&and that means time travel!
Thanks to an inventive teacher, their job every week is to go back in time and foil the attempts of a woman who is determined to take an unrightfully earned place in history by stealing the ideas and good deeds of others. Shes previously made attempts to hijack the legacies of Abraham Lincoln and Ben Franklin, among others.
How will these time traveling third graders stop Babs Magee from claiming credit for sewing the first American flag? They just need to prove that it was really Betsy Ross. The problem is, theres not enough proof Betsy Ross did sew the first American flag!
Knowing some of the controversy surrounding Betsy Rosss fame, I was curious to see how this would be handled in a childrens chapter book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was handled quite well.
Cohons impeccable research was put to good use and was well-placed throughout Deutschs artfully woven story. What a great team these two make! A subject of much dispute was explored thoroughly and explained with an exciting story sure to keep kids interest. When blended with the brilliant illustrations by Guy Francis, this book became even more appealing.
History has never been so fun!
