Long ago, the Storyteller claimed, in this first book of THE BELGARIAD, the evil god Torak drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But Garion did not believe in such stories. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved--but did not know...?

First of all - all the books in the series are well-written and well-developed, and I highly recommend them. The story flows, and it is an involved and detailed adventure.
This is the first book in the whole series, the first book in Belgariad.

Here we start following the life and adventures of Garion, whose quiet and predictable life at the farm is disrupted - his Aunt(who is his guardian) and others start searching for something very important that was stolen, and he goes with them. He meets kings and queens, and many other interesting and important people. Without yet understang why, he becomes involved in everything, and starts on the way to his destiny.

The story starts with a little history lesson which tells you what to expect. The reader has an idea as to whom the main character is but he hisself is left blank. The result is a series of events that seem to confuse the hero while leaving the reader feeling frustrated. A book that you have to keep on reading to the ren for the sheer curiosity as to wether the hero will learn the truth.
Has all the nessasry elemets to keep it intersting, a lost king, a prophercy, a quest and powerful enemies who are always one step ahead of the hero, who is as yet, in the dark about his true identity and is been led more than the leader.
The story though good seems a little slow at the begining and that is why I rated it 4. If I had read the book by itself I would have rated it five but after reading all the books in the series this seems like an introduction setting the stage for better things to follow and it does. However reading this is a must to enjoy the rest.
