On wondrous Market Street, you can buy amazing objects in alphabetical order, such as: apples, books, and clocks. Each illustration is a figure made of apples, books, clocks, and so on.

The shopping spree is prefaced and ended with a sprightly rhyme, while the illustrations are detailed and ingenious, garnering illustrator Arnold Lobel a prestigious Caldecott Honor in 1982. This nongimmicky alphabet book continues as a winning read-aloud today.
