This is one of my favorite books of all time! It has everything, historical facts, thrilling adventure. I love the characters and the plot line. Eva Ibbotson is also a remarkable writer and I have enjoyed many of her other novels. This was a step away from her normal fantasy but I loved it. I would recommend this book to  unconventional adventure seekers.

This is actually a really good book compared to Ibbotson's other books which were more for a younger age group.
Maia is an orphan living in a girls' shcool. The her guardian manages to track down some distant relation - a mr carter living in the amazon with his wife and twin daughters.
Maia is eager to go and live with them and she is sent on a ship with a governess to brazil. But when she arrives the family aren't quite what she expected. they only took her in for the money they were getting from her guardian.
i won't spoil the ending for you but this is a good book
