Song of the Trees
Most readers think that the first book Mildred D. Taylor wrote about the Logan family was the award-winning "Roll of thunder, Hear My Cry," but in fact it was "Song of the Trees," a novella about two days in nine-year-old Cassie Logan's life when her father's away and a group of white lumber jacks try to destoy the family forest. Cassie's concern is for the trees, not her safety, and she is convinced that her grandmother should do something to stop the destruction. Will anyone be able to save the forest?
Really nothing more than a longish short story, "Song of the Trees" lacks the substance of Taylor's later novels. Fans of her other books will want to read this one, too, but don't expect much in the way of plot and character development.
