When a bunch of scientists are assembled on a remote island to work on a top-secret computer project, their kids are highly upset at being dragged away from the rest of the world. But feisty twins Rachel and Roger, bumbling "Gamma" Ray, serious Trip, and pint-sized dynamo Wendy decide to join forces and beat their parents at their own game. With the help of Hap, the son of the island mechanic, they sey out on their own "Operation Sherlock," to build a computer that can think for itself. But when it becomes apparent that someone on the island is intent on ruining the mission, it may be up to the AI gang to stop them.

With the exception of the fact that all of the kids on the island just happen to be in the 12 to 14 age range, this book does a good job of combining reality with realistic-seeming sci-fi. It sets up well for the next two books in the trilogy.
