What I loved: This was such a fun counting adventure that is readable with great rhythm. Each page spread adds a dumpling, counting from 1 to 10. For young audiences, such as toddlers and preschoolers, this counting style is a great way to learn some simple and early math. The text itself is printed with a large and clear font, making it easy to read, and the rhythm of the writing makes it flow smoothly off the tongue (once you know the pronunciations). Each page also features a helper with a related name in the language from which the dumpling comes. The illustrations are bright and colorful, featuring a lot of different families, and the recipes at the end add to the fun for people who want to try making some of the delicious looking dumplings featured.
What left me wanting more: As a small thing, I wish there was a pronunciation guide to some of the words for the helpers and dumplings, as I had to google to check some of them for words with which I was not familiar.
Final verdict: A delightful counting and food adventure, DUMPLING DAY is a brightly colored, rhyming picture book that is sure to entertain toddlers and up! With added recipes at the end, this could also turn into a great culinary adventure.
