From Christina Tosi, the playful creator of the popular bakery Milk Bar, this is the story of a girl whose delicious dream comes to life, filling the world with color, creativity, and joy. Original recipe included!

Everything in Samesville is exactly the same, from the people and their clothes to the houses and their doors.

So one night before going to bed, Sammi tucks a recipe card under her pillow and wishes that things were not the same. And when she wakes up, that white, black, gray sameness is gone, replaced with things that are bolder and brighter and wilder than ever before!

With her newly colorful world and a new recipe book, she gathers her friends and makes the most magical cake, beautiful and different--just like Sammi and her friends.

Things will never be the same again.

EVERY CAKE HAS A STORY is an intriguing and unique picture book about individuality and creativity. In Samesville, everyone is the same with the same clothes, houses, and people. Sammi wants to make a cake, but in Samesville, it would have to be vanilla with chocolate frosting. Instead, she makes a wish that everything would not be the same. Her dreams are new and wild, and when she wakes up, the recipe that she put under her pillow has become a whole book and the whole town has changed. With lots of vibrant color and friends with their own styles, they create some new and original cake flavors- and Samesville is never the same.

What I loved: This is such a unique and imaginative story to celebrate individuality and diversity. If everyone and everything were the same, it would be so boring. The things that make us different also make us special - and this is great for everyone. These themes are really important and wrapped into a cute story about cakes - because who wants vanilla cake with chocolate frosting ALL the time? The switch from black and white to color illustrations help to convey this messaging, and I loved all the fun details that add to the story and make it into something really special.

Final verdict: Imaginative and clever picture book celebrating diversity and individuality - as well as cakes, EVERY CAKE HAS A STORY is a delightful read about finding your way and trying new things. Recommend for preschoolers and up.
