A humorous tale with lovable characters from Alex Willmore's Big Trip about finding creative inspiration in our environment, while also being considerate to those around us

The Great Paint is a brilliantly funny tale about what can happen when we forget to think of others and get carried away with our artistic endeavors. Frog thinks he’s pretty artistic and that the rest of the forest could do with a little bit of inventive improvement. From painting to sculpture to performance art and origami, Frog gets to work on beautifying everything around him . . . but will his friends appreciate his creativity? And how will Frog show them he’s sorry and that true creative inspiration lies in the friendship of others?

THE GREAT PAINT is a cute picture book read about friendship, empathy, and art. Frog loves to make art, and he has just the idea - he will decorate Bear's cave. Except that Bear did not love it. He then goes to the rest of his friends to create art, but they also are not enthused by his work. Frog stops to think about it and realizes that what he enjoys may not be what they enjoy - especially when they did not choose it. He decides to make it up to them by creating his own art show in his swamp.

What I loved: The illustrations here are full of fun and expressive of the joy and love for art. Frog is a charming little character, who just wants to share his art with friends. However, he has some things to learn about respecting other people's spaces and where to do his art. The themes of friendship, art, and empathy are great for this age group, and children will giggle at Frog's antics along the way.

What left me wanting more: I would have appreciated more of the apology and making things right element to the story (eg, helping to clean up his friends and fix his mistakes) in the story. I felt that the themes just did not quite get to this really positive place after realizing what he did wrong.

Final verdict: A cute picture book about friendship, THE GREAT PAINT tells the story of a Frog who just loves art and wants to share it - once he learns how to respect others.
