Olwen the baby owl isn't happy. Sitting on her branch is boring. What else can little owls do?

Olwen longs to be just like hare, squirrel and bear but no matter how hard she tries she can't hop, scamper or roar. That's not what owls do. But the little owl soon discovers that she might be able to do something just as wonderful. Can Olwen find her wings and soar?

This sweet and charming picture book sensitively explores the feeling of longing to be different and celebrates embracing what makes us special. With expressive, intricate illustrations, this is a lively story created by mother-and-daughter team Nora and Pirkko-Liisa Surojegin.

OLWEN FINDS HER WINGS is a sweet picture book about discovering your own talents and finding your own way. Olwen is bored of hanging out in the tree with her mother, brothers, and sister, so she decides to go exploring and find something else to do. She comes across different animals and decides to try the impressive things they can do, but she finds herself unable to hop as far as a hare or growl as loud as a bear. They reassure her that she'll soon find out what she can do. Later, her mother shows her how to hold out her wings and fly! Olwen is amazed, and she loves this new skill.

What I loved: This is a really charming story about finding your own path and special talents. The text suits the story perfectly, with just enough text on each page to keep young readers engaged. The illustrations are gorgeous, detailed, and lush with realistic looking animals that capture the imagination. Young children will empathize with the young owl who wants to do more - but is not always able to do all of the things she dreams. As she finds out what she can do and the wonder of it all, readers will rejoice with her.

The text is printed clear and is easy to read, and the length on each page is great for toddlers through elementary school readers who will have time to examine each illustration but still allow the pages to turn quickly.

What left me wanting more: As a small point, the image of the bear tossing Olwen may need additional explanation for some children to say that we shouldn't swipe/shove our friends and with her claws extended may look a bit scary for sensitive readers (though fine when looked at with the story context).

Final verdict: With stunning illustrations and a simple story about finding your own path, OLWEN FINDS HER WINGS is a sweet picture book that young readers are sure to enjoy.
