SLOTH AND SMELL THE ROSES is another charming and colorful book from the fantastic sister duo, Eunice and Sabrina Moyle. In this board book, they lightly introduce the concept of mindfulness by talking about different emotions and how to help with those feelings. Although the statements are brief, this is a great starting point for teaching how to handle emotions. For instance, the book suggests that when you are feeling so mad, you use your words to let it out and try not to pout.

What I loved: Throughout the book, they cover some basic concepts around sadness, the feeling of things being unfair, needing to calm down, and more. Although it cannot go in depth on these different topics, this creates a starting space for talking about techniques to handle these feelings and ways of viewing the world around. With brightly colored illustrations that use colors expertly to capture the emotions being discussed, the images throughout the book are a definite win. Add that to the rhyming phrases which roll off the tongue, and this is a book that children are sure to enjoy.

The text is written in a large font, making it easy to read, and I love the neon backgrounds that manage to keep the writing clear. This is a great one to read aloud. The board book format, combined with the quickly turning pages, make this a great book for toddlers and preschoolers.

Final verdict: With delightful illustrations and rhyming text, SLOTH AND SMELL THE ROSES is a great board book introduction to mindfulness and emotions. Recommend reading with toddlers and preschoolers and supplementing with other techniques for managing tough/overwhelming feelings.
